1. Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour has officially opened its doors at a launch event. Located next to the International Convention Centre Sydney (ICC Sydney), the hotel has 590 guest rooms including 35 of the brand’s coveted suites.
2. Melbourne Convention Bureau (MCB) has posted its fifth consecutive year of growth, after it exceeded all its targets in the 2016/17 financial year. The bureau achieved $321 million in economic contribution to Victoria, which was 17% above the annual goal. The international events sector in Melbourne contributed 70% of economic impact for the 2016/17 financial year.
3. Daydream Island Resort and Spa in the Whitsundays will significantly expand its conference facilities as part of a $65 million redevelopment following the devastation caused by Cyclone Debbie earlier this year.
4. Rottnest Island will permit glamping on the island from the summer of 2018-19 as part of a development project approved by the West Australian Government. Located off the coast of Perth, the announcement is part of plans to build a beachfront eco-resort at the site known for its famous quokkas.
5. Australia's business events industry is calling for an overhaul of visa arrangements as part of reforms being considered by the Federal Govt. On behalf of the sector, the Association of Australian Convention Bureaux (AACB) has highlighted the significant contribution international business delegates make to the national economy, pointing out that typical conference attendees spend 9% more than leisure tourists.
6. Digitalisation will be the key to success for the business events industry according to The Global Association of the Exhibition Industry (UFI) CEO Kai Hattendorf in his State of the Industry address on Tuesday. Hosted by the Exhibition & Event Association of Australasia (EEAA) at the ICC Sydney, Hattendorf said digitalisation would replace globalisation as the driving force of the sector.
7. After 10 months of operation, The International Convention Centre Sydney (ICC Sydney) has secured its 1,000th event. The NSW Government said the centre was on track to inject $5 billion into the NSW economy over the next 25 years.
8. W Hotels, part of Marriott International, is set to open the first five-star hotel in Brisbane’s central business district in two decades. Located at 300 George Street, W Brisbane will mark the re-entry of the W brand into Australia, with room bookings to commence in November 2017..
